Oral contraceptive pills and inherited thrombophilia in a young woman with deep venous thrombosis.

چکیده
Inherited risk factors for vascular disease include factor V Leiden [1], prothrombin [2] and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) point mutations [3]. The use of oral contraceptives is also a recognized risk factor for venous thromboembolism [4]. In Eastern Mediterranean countries, the highest frequency of factor V Leiden was reported in Lebanon (14%) [5,6]. However, there are no studies related to awareness of the use of oral contraceptive pills among individuals with a high risk for thrombotic events. Here we present the case of a female patient on oral contraceptive pills who sustained an extensive deep venous thrombosis (DVT). The patient was found to be hetero zygous for factor V Leiden (G1691A) and homozygous for the MTHFR (C677T) mutations.

متن کاملHigher risk of venous thrombosis during early use of oral contraceptives in women with inherited clotting defects.
BACKGROUND Results of recent studies show that the risk for venous thrombosis is highest during initial oral contraceptive use. This suggests a subgroup of females who are at immediate risk of thrombosis when exposed to oral contraceptives. OBJECTIVE To determine whether women with inherited clotting defects who use oral contraceptives develop venous thrombosis at an earlier stage than do tho...

متن کاملRetinal vein occlusion in a patient on oral contraceptive pills: a case report
Introduction Retinal vascular obstruction is rare in young patients; however, it is a significant cause of blindness, especially retinal vein occlusion (RVO), the most common acquired retinal vascular pathology in adults(1). RVO is divided in central (CRVO), hemicentral (HRVO) and branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). The reported prevalence of RVO is 5.2/1000 for all types, with 4.42 for BRVO ...
متن کاملUnusual forms of venous thrombosis and thrombophilia.
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) results from multiple interactions between inherited and environmental risk factors. The lower limbs are the most common site of VTE, but more rarely other venous sites can be involved. The role of risk factors for VTE can be different in the various thrombotic manifestations, and there are specific risk factors for specific sites. Coagulation abnormalities causing ...
